Mizzou tops Kansas in Border War

Friday night freshman Matt Vollmer got an opportunity he’s been hoping for. With Zach Nisson injured, Vollmer got the start at attack. And he made the most of it.

Matt Plewes (12) and Matt Vollmer (15) celebrate Vollmer's sixth goal of the game.

Vollmer caught fire Friday night and poured in seven of Mizzou’s 16 goals on the way to the 16-9 victory over Kansas. The game was a personal best for the freshman.

Mizzou opened the game hot, scoring five goals in the first quarter. But then the Tigers lost the fire. They scored only once in the second quarter and none in the third. This allowed Kansas to take charge, gathering a lot of momentum as they built a 7-6 lead by the end of the third quarter.

During the break before the fourth quarter coach Keith Euker told the team that there was nothing more he could do, that they had to find the way to win the game.

The fourth quarter started out with Kansas still in charge, adding another goal to the score. Fourteen seconds later Gerry Leonard  scored an unassisted goal. Then Walter Reilly fed Matt Vollmer for a score and the Tigers had tied the game at 8 with 9:43 to play.

The Tigers unleashed at that point and pummeled the Kansas goalie with eight more goals. Missouri 16, Kansas 9.

  • Vollmer: 8 points: 7 goals, 1 assist
  • Reilly: 4 points:  2 G, 2 A
  • Leonard: 3 points: 2 G, 1 A
