COLUMBIA-The University of Missouri Men’s lacrosse team will have three captains for the 2017 season, as announced by Head Coach Nick Anagnostis Tuesday.
Seniors Kevin Boyle, Matt Needham and Alex Schott will captain the Tigers squad for the upcoming season, with Boyle and Needham returning as captains from the 2016 season.
Boyle (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) will be captain for Missouri for the second season in a row. Since transferring to Mizzou for his sophomore season the senior midfielder has been a constant presence on the Tigers’ first and second line midfields. Through 31 games, Boyle has 34 points (19 goals and 15 assists), the most of any senior on the team.
Needham (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) is entering an unprecedented third year as a Missouri captain. The senior goalie will be the starting goalie for Missouri for the fourth season in a row. The two-time all-GRLC selection is coming off a season in which he was named to the second team, after a solid 2016 campaign. Needham will finish his career as one of the greatest goaltenders in program history and has a 64.5-percent career save percentage. With 406 saves entering the 2017 season, he’s on pace to break the 500-save plateau this season.
Schott (St. Louis/Ladue) will be a Missouri captain for the first time this season. The senior defender is a two-time all-GRLC selection and a two-year starter for the Tigers. The Jacksonville-transfer has been a starter for the program since setting foot in Columbia and is the sole starting close-defender returning from 2016. Schott has 93 career ground balls and one assist through 28 games played at Missouri.
The Tigers open the 2017 season on Friday against Missouri S&T at Stankowski Field. Please visit Mizzou’s MCLA page at mcla.us/team/missouri for rosters, stats and game information during the regular season and make sure to follow @MizzouLacrosse on Twitter for all the latest information.
