Hokies hand Mizzou its first loss, 12-4

Sean Hogarty takes a shot to the chest in Monday's game against Virginia Tech. The defender is Mitch Tusing.

The Virginia Tech Hokies handed the Missouri Tigers their biggest loss of the season Monday night, beating them 12-4. Missouri is now 4-1 for the season.

The caliber of the VT team wasn’t the only factor that made this game particularly challenging. Recent rains had made the Hokies’ home field muddy with patches of standing water. Though the crease was turf, the area surround it was a swampy mess.

Five players stepped up to fill positions for missing players. The Tigers lost two players due to shoulder injuries. Three other players were out due to disciplinary actions.

Tech got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first couple of minutes. Missouri countered with a goal by Gerry Leonard in the first quarter. But Missouri was unable to mount a consistent offense and was down 6-1 at the half.

Thought they weren’t happy with their game, the Hokies were consistent on offense, scoring three goals in each of the second half quarters.

Gerry Leonard, Chris Heim, Ryan Biek and Ryan McKibben all scored for Missouri. Full stats are available now.
Missouri is scheduled to face Clemson Thursday night at 7 p.m.
